Freshmen Slay the Green Monster

HANOVER, N.H. – The recruited and walk-on freshmen finally joined forces together as a class to race in the Green Monster Freshman Invitational Regatta at Dartmouth on Saturday. Racing in two eights of similar speed, according to the format of the event, the young Engineers won the regatta by posting the best combined time over the three-mile course.

It was a beautiful day on the Connecticut River, and racing conditions were ideal save for a minor headwind through the first short stretch of the course. Both boats struggled to get past the first turn and out of the wind, then settled into their rhythm at about 30 strokes per minute.

In the head race format the “B” eight started ninth, and managed to walk through two opposing crews by the finish to post the fourth fastest time of the day – 16:56.0.

As the last boat in the starting order, the “A” eight was determined to work up through the pack. The crew did just that to pass three opposing teams as it rowed by the Dartmouth boathouse around the final bend. Their time of 16:35.0 proved to be the fastest overall by 16 seconds.

Upstream rival Radcliffe pulled the second and third best times to finish between the two Tech crews and earn second place in the team standings. Completing the team results were Dartmouth in third, Radcliffe lightweights in fourth, UMass in fifth, Northeastern in sixth, and Vermont in seventh. There was also one boat from Holy Cross that finished sixth individually, as well as an eight of MIT lightweight women, which came in 13th among the 17 entries.

“All the women are thrilled to bring home a victory,” remarked novice coach Aaron Benson. “I told the team afterward that wins are very hard to find against the teams we race, and that they should savor this one. They earned it by taking every single stroke fiercely, which is something we’ve come to count on from the Class of 2012 rowers.”

The team now heads into the final two weeks of the fall season, and will conclude racing with the Foot of the Charles at home on November 15th.
