  • Sakharova and Paturu Lead Women's Fencing at NCAA Northeast Regional

    POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – MIT freshman Helen Sakharova (Ridgewood, N.J.) captured 12th place in the epee rankings as senior Mounica Paturu (Acton, Mass.) was close behind in 15th at the NCAA Fencing Northeast Regional Championship on Sunday. Senior Madison Douglas (Concord, Mass.) and junior Jessica Li (Englewood, Colo.) both claimed 21st place in the sabre and foil competitions, respectively, in the final outing for the women's fencing team.

  • Women’s Fencing Captures Second Place at New England Championship

    WELLESLEY, Mass. – On the strength of first-place finishes by the epee and foil squads, the MIT women's fencing team ranked second out of 13 teams at the New England Championship hosted by Wellesley College on Saturday. Freshman Helen Sakharova (Ridgewood, N.J.) and senior Mounica Paturu (Acton, Mass.) captured the gold and silver medals for the epee competition while junior Jessica Li (Englewood, Colo.) and sophomore Sophia Russo (Santa Barbara, Calif.) secured gold and bronze medals in foil action. Senior Madison Douglas (Concord, Mass.) had the best performance for the sabre squad with her ninth-place finish.
  • MIT Places Three on NFC Women’s All-Star Team

    CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – For the first time since 2012 the MIT women’s fencing team received a trio of Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) All-Star awards. Junior Cordelia Avery (New York, N.Y.) was named to the sabre first team as classmate Jessica Li (Englewood, Colo.) earned a spot on the foil first team. Freshman Helen Sakharova (Ridgewood, N.J.) rounded out the Engineers with a selection to the epee second team.

    BOSTON, Mass. – Facing a trio of local foes, the MIT women’s fencing team closed out the regular season at the Beanpot hosted by Harvard University on Wednesday night. The Engineers ended the head-to-head team portion of their campaign with a record of 17-9 after being defeated by Boston College (20-7), Brandeis University (21-6), and Harvard University (20-7). Freshman Helen Sakharova (Ridgewood, N.J.) powered the epee team with a 7-2 ledger as junior Jessica Li (Englewood, Colo.) was 4-2 in foil action. Senior Madison Douglas (Concord, Mass.) turned in the best performance for the sabre squad with a mark of 1-8.
  • Women's Fencing Racks up 4-1 Outing at Eric Sollee Invitational

    WALTHAM, Mass. - The MIT women's fencing team continued to roll at the Eric Sollee Invitational as it racked up a 4-1 ledger on Saturday at Brandeis University. The Engineers (17-6) fell to Stevens Institute of Technology (19-8) in their first outing of the day, but bounced back to defeat Hunter College (25-2), New Jersey Institute of Technology (17-10), NYU (17-10), and Haverford College (18-9). Junior Jessica Li (Englewood, Colo.) led the foil team with a 13-2 record while senior Madison Douglas (Concord, Mass.) powered the sabre squad with a 12-3 mark. Freshman Margaret Bertoni (Pfafftown, N.C.) was the top performer for the epee unit as she went 9-4.

    CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The MIT women's fencing team picked up right where it left off in the Northeast Fencing Conference as it produced another 5-1 record on Saturday. The Engineers (13-5, 10-2 NFC) defeated Vassar College (15-12), Dartmouth College (17-10), Smith College (19-8), Tufts University (14-13), and Brown University (14-13) with their lone loss coming at the hands of host Boston College (15-12). Junior Cordelia Avery (New York, N.Y.) paced the sabre squad with a 13-2 record as freshman Helen Sakharova (Ridgewood, N.J.) generated a ledger of 14-4 for the epee team. Junior Jessica Li (Englewood, Colo.) powered the foil unit with a tally of 10-2.

    WALTHAM, Mass. - The MIT women’s fencing team generated a 3-3 ledger at the Brandeis University Invitational on Sunday. The Engineers (8-4) topped Drew University (22-5), Brown University (18-9), and Yale University (17-10) but fell to St. John’s University (20-7), Cornell University (16-11), and Johns Hopkins University (14-13). Junior Cordelia Avery (New York, N.Y.) powered the sabre squad with a 14-4 record as freshman Helen Sakharova (Ridgewood, N.J.) and junior Jessica Li (Englewood, Colo.) both finished at 13-5 in epee and foil action, respectively.

    PROVIDENCE, R.I. - In its first Northeast Fencing Conference competition of the season, the MIT women's fencing racked up a record of 5-1 on Saturday at Brown University. The Engineers defeated Boston University (25-2), Wellesley College (20-7), UMass Amherst (25-2), University of New Hampshire (27-0), and Sacred Heart University (14-13) with their lone loss coming at the hands of Brandeis University (15-12). Junior Jessica Li (Englewood, Colo.) won 17 of her 18 foil bouts as classmate Cordelia Avery (New York, N.Y.) was 14-1 in sabre action. Freshman Margaret Bertoni (Pfafftown, N.C.) was the top performer on the epee team with a tally of 11-4.

    NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The MIT women’s fencing team racked up nine top-10 placements in the season opening The Big One Invitational hosted by Smith College on Saturday. Freshman Helen Sakharova (Ridgewood, N.J.) and junior Cordelia Avery (New York, N.Y.) captured the gold medal in epee and sabre, respectively. For the second year in a row junior Jessica Li (Englewood, Colo.) tied for third place in the foil competition while senior Mounica Paturu (Acton, Mass.) claimed third place in epee.
