Northampton, Mass. (April 3) – MIT junior Helen Sakharova (Ridgewood, N.J.) became the second student-athlete in the history of the women's fencing program and the first epeeist to be named the Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) Women's Fencer of the Year as announced by the league this week. She joins Robin Shin '13, who earned this accolade in 2012 for sabre, on the Engineers' short list of recipients.
The only three-time NFC All-Star in program history, Sakharova went 21-0 in the first conference competition of the season hosted by Brown University on November 18. She then won 17 of 18 bouts in MIT second NFC outing which was held on January 28 at Boston College.
Sakharova capped off the season by being the lone Division III epee qualifier at the NCAA Championship, where she finished 21st overall.
