CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Six first-half goals helped propel Wellesley College to an 8-0 victory over MIT in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey game on Tuesday afternoon. The Blue improved to 9-4 on the season and 3-1 in the conference while the Engineers fell to 4-9 overall and 1-4 in the NEWMAC.
Catherine Marchetta put Wellesley on the board 5:26 into the contest with an unassisted tally. The Blue extended its lead by scoring three goals in a seven-minute span, with the last goal coming inside the 21st minute. Wellesley struck two more times before the half was through for a commanding 6-0 advantage.
The Blue recorded goals in the 50th and 55th minutes to set up the final score. MIT's offense showed some life in the second frame as it generated four shots and received five penalty corners.
