CLAREMONT, Calif. – Nine unanswered goals by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the first half propelled it to a 20-10 victory over the MIT women's lacrosse team on Monday night. Junior Laura Wacker (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied four goals, one assist, and two draw controls for the Engineers.

The Cardinal and Gray opened the scoring after 1:01 elapsed in the contest when senior Katie Kauffman (Olney, Md.) connected on a feed from freshman Emma Kane (Garden City, N.Y.). Shortly after the ensuing draw, Wacker buried a free-position goal. The Athenas responded with their pivotal 9-0 run which resulted in a comfortable margin with eight minutes remaining in the frame. A solo effort by junior Molly McShane (Lake Bluff, Ill.) ended MIT's scoring drought, but CMS replied with its own unassisted marker. Wacker set up Kauffman at 1:15 while the Athenas found the back of the net with 36 seconds remaining, creating an 11-4 advantage at the intermission.

CMS carried the momentum into the second stanza, generating two goals in the first five minutes. The Engineers countered with tallies by Wacker, McShane, and Kauffman, trimming their deficit to six (13-7) with 23:13 on the clock. The Athenas then mounted a 5-0 spurt during the next eight minutes, establishing their largest lead of the night. MIT continued to attack, receiving an unassisted tally from Kauffman and back-to-back markers by Wacker that made the score 18-10 with 10:31 left to play. CMS tacked on two more goals to conclude the scoring.

Kauffman finished with four goals and three draw controls as McShane posted four draw controls and two goals. Freshman Lyndsy Muri (Ashland, Mass.) recorded three caused turnovers while sophomore Sarah Ritter (The Woodlands, Texas) collected 12 saves.

MIT (1-6) continues its California trip at the University of Redlands on Tuesday, March 27.
