CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – With 34 seconds remaining in regulation, sophomore Rebecca Smith (Verona, N.J.) knocked in a feed from junior Jane Dietrich (West Hartford, Conn.) to give visiting Gordon College a 12-11 victory over MIT in a non-conference women's lacrosse game on Tuesday night. Both Smith and Dietrich finished with two goals and two assists for the Fighting Scots (1-0) while seniors Laura Wacker (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Meghan Wright (Devon, Pa.) earned hat-tricks for the Engineers (0-2).

Wright opened the scoring after 28 seconds elapsed but Gordon responded with four unanswered goals during the next four minutes. MIT countered with sophomore Emma Kane (Garden City, N.Y.) finding Wacker for a pair of goals which sandwiched a free-position strike from freshman Kristyn Berretta (San Diego, Calif.) to even the score at four with 12:05 left in the half. Junior Anna Blomberg (Simsbury, Conn.) generated back-to-back goals three minutes apart to give the Fighting Scots a 6-4 edge at the intermission.

Freshman Jessica Castelline (Concord, Mass.) was a factor in all three of Gordon's goals during the early stages of the second stanza. She found classmate Bailey Grinnell (South Hamilton, Mass.) for a pair of strikes before scoring one of her own to establish a 9-5 advantage at the 26:12 mark. In a span of three minutes the Engineers cut their deficit in half courtesy of a free-position blast by Kane and a goal from freshman Nadia Wallace (Rochester, N.Y.). The Fighting Scots gained some breathing room when Dietrich and Castelline found the back of the net 32 seconds apart to make the score 11-7 with 17:27 on the clock.

MIT slowly chipped away at the deficit as it eventually knotted the game at 11 with 2:08 left to play. Wright began the rally with a solo effort which was quickly matched by Wacker at the midway point of the frame. Less than a minute later Wright brought the Engineers within one but the game became a defensive battle down the stretch. MIT freshman Isabella DiDio (Jenkintown, Pa.) ended the stalemate by converting a free-position shot for the equalizer.

Blomberg picked up the ensuing draw control which later led to Smith's game-winning effort. On the next draw, Blomberg once again came away with the ball but the Engineers pushed her back into Gordon's defensive zone. The Engineers forced a turnover and made a charge at the net but they lost control of the ball in the arc. Graduate-student Krysti Leach (Naples, Maine) scooped up the loose ball along the near sideline during the final seconds to secure the victory.

Kane finished with one goal and two assists while DiDio posted one goal, one assist, and three groundballs. Berretta also collected three groundballs as freshman Kira Schott (New Canaan, Conn.) tacked on a goal for the Cardinal and Gray. Wright earned three caused turnovers while Wacker and Wallace notched two draw controls apiece. In net, freshman Paige Kennedy (Eastchester, N.Y.) generated six saves.

Blomberg tallied three goals, one assist, six draw controls, and four groundballs for the Fighting Scots. Castelline recorded two goals, two assists, and three groundballs as junior Stephanie Fitzgerald (Groveland, Mass.) compiled one goal, one assist, six draw controls, and four groundballs. Senior Alana Woods (Medford, Mass.) turned away two shots in the first half and earned the win in net while sophomore Julianne Kirkpatrick (Rochester, N.Y.) finished the night with three saves.

Next up for MIT will be a home game against Lasell College on Thursday, March 14 while Gordon continues its roadtrip on Thursday, March 7 at Simmons College.
