SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – A pair of big runs helped propel Mount Holyoke College past MIT, 17-6, in a NEWMAC women's lacrosse game on Saturday afternoon. Senior Laura Wacker (Brooklyn, N.Y.) paced the Engineers (4-7, 1-2 NEWMAC) with three goals and added a draw control.

The Lyons jumped out to a 3-0 lead but MIT narrowed the gap to one in a span of 32 seconds. Wacker put the Engineers on the board after connecting on a feed from freshman Nadia Wallace (Rochester, N.Y.) and then sophomore Emma Kane (Garden City, N.Y.) found junior Erica Du (Excelsior, Minn.) at the 24:28 mark. Mount Holyoke responded by rattling off five unanswered goals during the next five minutes to go up 8-2. A defensive battle ensued until Wacker converted a free-position shot with 6:37 left in the half while the Lyons provided the final marker with under three minutes remaining.

The hosts extended their advantage to 10-3 after 1:20 elapsed in the second stanza. MIT countered with a 3-1 spurt that featured unassisted strikes by Wacker, Du, and freshman Isabella DiDio (Jenkintown, Pa.) which brought it within five (11-6) with 18:55 on the clock. This was as close as it would get for the Engineers as Mount Holyoke generated six straight goals to end the game.

Freshman Kira Schott (New Canaan, Conn.) recorded three draw controls and two groundballs for MIT while Wallace added two draw controls. In net, sophomore Candice Kaplan (Arlington, Va.) made four saves during the first half as freshman Paige Kennedy (Eastchester, N.Y.) turned away four shots in the second frame.

The Engineers continue theirr roadtrip on Tuesday, April 9 when they visit NEWMAC rival Babson College.
