NORTON, Mass. – Wheaton College rattled off six goals over the course of 15 minutes in the second half en route to an 11-6 victory over MIT in a NEWMAC women's lacrosse tilt on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Isabella DiDio (Jenkintown, Pa.) tallied three goals, one assist, four groundballs, and three draw controls for the Engineers (9-4, 2-3 NEWMAC).
DiDio opened the scoring with a free-position shot after 2:46 elapsed and then set up freshman Erica Green (Ivyland, Pa.) at the 21:46 mark. Almost a minute later, senior Erica Du (Excelsior, Minn.) buried her own free-position attempt to give MIT a 3-0 advantage. The Lyons ended the shutout shortly after the ensuing draw but the game became a back-and-forth affair until Wheaton ended the stalemate with 8:22 on the clock.
The Lyons scored twice during the first 4:39 of the second stanza, putting them in front, 4-3. The Engineers quickly tied the game courtesy of a solo effort by sophomore Kira Schott (New Canaan, Conn.). However, Wheaton slowly strung together six unanswered goals as its final marker came with 5:05 left to play. DiDio ended the Cardinal and Gray's scoring drought by redirecting a feed from freshman Keeley Erhardt (Ann Arbor, Mich.) with 1:59 to go before completing the hat-trick 33 seconds later. The Lyons then recorded the final goal of the day with 15 ticks remaining.
Schott tacked on five draw controls, four groundballs, and two caused turnovers while freshman Devin Williams (Herndon, Va.) posted three groundballs and three caused turnovers for the Engineers. Senior Erin Kenney (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) registered two groundballs as junior Candice Kaplan (Arlington, Va.) collected seven saves.
Next up for MIT will be a trip to the University of Southern Maine on Sunday, April 13.
