CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - In its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference opener, MIT fell to host Springfield College, 20-13, on Saturday. Casey Flynn paced the Engineers (1-5, 0-1 NEWMAC) with five goals and an assist while Lily He, Laura Watson, and Samantha O'Keefe each added two goals. O'Keefe notched nine draw controls as Watson and Stephanie Brenman registered four and three groundballs, respectively. Monique Squiers collected 11 saves while Brenman and Molly McCartin posted a pair of caused turnovers.
The Pride tallied five straight goals to open the game before Flynn put MIT on the board midway through the frame. Springfield struck twice as He's free position shot made the score 7-2 at the 7:29 mark. The Pride tacked on two more goals but strikes from He and Flynn during the last 31 seconds brought the Engineers within five (9-4) at the break.
The scoring during the first six minutes of the second stanza was balanced as each side notched three goals. Springfield extended its advantage after 22 seconds expired. Within a span of 1:13, Flynn found Watson and then recorded an unassisted strike that narrowed the gap to 10-6. The Pride responded with back-to-back goals of its own as O'Keefe converted a free-position shot at 23:48.
Springfield then mounted an 8-2 run that increased its lead to 11 (20-9). Stephanie Leger and Erica Little broke up the Pride's spurt as the Engineers wrapped up the scoring during the final nine minutes of regulation. Flynn posted a free-position goal and then added a solo effort while O'Keefe and Watson each notched a free-position goal.
