Women's Soccer Sinks Salem State 2-1

SALEM, Mass. – Freshman forward Emily Kuo scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season in the first half, as the MIT Engineers edged the Salem State Lady Vikings 2-1 in a non-conference game Tuesday night. The win improved the Engineers to 4-2 overall while the Lady Vikings fell to 4-3.

Kuo scored in the 29th minute on a penalty kick putting the ball past goalkeeper Leah Potcner. Kuo almost had another goal in the second half, but Potcner made an outstanding save to shut down the scoring attempt.

The Lady Vikings were on the receiving end of a bad bounce when a Salem State player deflected an MIT pass into her own goal at 55:39 to give the Engineers a 2-0 lead.

Salem State got on the board four and half minutes later when sophomore forward Jackie Gauthier scored a brilliant goal assisted by junior midfielder Erin O’Brien.

MIT outshot Salem State 10-5 in the game. Leah Potcner made 7 saves in the losing effort. Freshman Meaghan Wright and junior Katy Olesnavage combined for 5 saves in net for the  Engineers.

The Lady Vikings look to bounce back as they host MASCAC conference rival Fitchburg State. The Engineers look to extend their winning streak when they open conference play against Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Both games are Saturday, September 26, at 1 p.m.
