DeRosa and Hernley Selected to Play in Senior Bowl

Cambridge, Mass. – Claire DeRosa and Lauren Hernley have been selected to play in this weekend's annual New England Women's  Intercollegiate Soccer Association (NEWISA) Senior Bowl. The game, which features the best seniors from across New England, will be at the fields of Merrimack College in North Andover, MA.

Hernley and DeRosa will represent the Engineers on the Senior Bowl squads, which include players from Divisions 1, 2, and 3. Coaches from across the region vote on the players that will earn spots in the game, and then two sides are created by mixing players from each of the three divisions. The sides will face off in an exhibition game on Saturday afternoon.

Hernley, a midfielder from Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, recently was named the third Academic All-American in MIT women's soccer history, the first to earn first team honors. The two year captain and two-time NEWMAC player of the year is 9th all time in school scoring history and 10th in career points. She has been named NSCAA All-New England, NEWISA All New-England, and was the program's first ECAC New England All-Star and NSCAA All East Region Scholar. She co-led the NEWMAC in game winning goals in 2010 and was in the top six in shots, goals, and points.

DeRosa, a lockdown defender from Norwood, Massachusetts, started over 45 games for the Engineers, appearing in every game in her last three seasons. She switched from midfielder to outside back early in her junior year and never relinquished a starting role. She was an important piece in a defense that allowed only 7 goals over the 2010 season and twice tied the school record with four consecutive shutouts. DeRosa played just about every minute in MIT's championship and NCAA runs in 2009 and NEWMAC tournament games this year and logged as many minutes as just about any player in the last two seasons.

This is the seventh year and fifth in a row that MIT has had players selected to play in the Senior Bowl, and the third consecutive year that two Engineers have earned the nod. Stephanie Brenman and Jodie Wu were participants in 2008, while Katie Pesce and Liz Theurer were selected last year.

Kickoff time is TBA for Saturday's game, but is most likely to be at 2:30 PM
