Springfield Cruises Past MIT In Key Conference Battle

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Paced by a pair of goals from Caitlin Sawczuk, the Springfield College women's soccer team rolled past MIT, 6-0, on Brock-Affleck Field at the Irv Schmid Sports Complex on Tuesday evening.

With the win, the Pride improve to 11-2 overall and 4-1 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference while the Engineers slip to 8-4 overall and 3-2 against the league. Springfield outshot the Engineers 25-4 in the game and have now outscored its opponents 39-1 this season at home.

Springfield wasted no time tallying the first goal of the game as Jillian Pereira ripped a shot from 25 yards out into the top of the net past the outstretched arms of MIT goalie Stephanie Brenman less than two minutes into the match. Lauren Peltier then tallied the Pride's second goal of the game after she finished up a rebound from six yards out in the 22nd minute. Thirty-six seconds later, Sawczuk capped Springfield's first-half scoring with her first goal of the match.

Sawczuk opened up the second-half scoring with a tally in the 49th minute to give Springfield a 4-0 lead. Nicole Hanewich netted her team-leading 13th goal of the season in the 55th minute, while Suzanne put the finishing touches on the dominating win with a goal in the 58th minute. Sue Jenney and Katie Delude combined for the shutout, with Jenney securing two saves through 55 minutes of work. Junior Stephanie Brenman made eight saves in a losing effort for the Engineers.
