NORTON, Mass. - The MIT softball team fell to 3-8 on the year and 0-2 in NEWMAC action following Friday's 4-3 and 13-2 losses to Wheaton College. The Lyons raise their record to 13-4 and a perfect 4-0 in conference play.
The hosts needed all seven innings of the opening game to knock off visiting MIT, as Wheaton fell behind 1-0 in the third frame. Cheryl Texin reached base on a fielder's choice, moved to second on a wild pitch and eventually scored on a Carly Saylor double. The Lyons knotted things up in the bottom half of the fourth, as Kate Malloy doubled to open the inning, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an Erika Marini base hit.
Wheaton tacked on two runs in the fifth to take its first lead of the game, as the Lyons took advantage of a pair of MIT defensive miscues. The Engineers answered with two runs in the sixth, this time scoring on two Wheaton errors to tie the game at three. In the seventh inning, Amy Rowbottom retired MIT's side in order, setting up the Lyons' game-winning run in the bottom half of the inning. Meredith Gorton began the frame with a bunt single, moved to third on another Engineer error and eventually scored on a fielder's choice.
Leah Bogsted took the loss, scattering six hits with seven strikeouts and three walks in 6.1 innings of work. Offensively, Batya Fellman batted 3-for-3 with a run and Holly Jeffrey was 2-for-3 with a RBI.
Wheaton forced the eight-run mercy rule in game two, racking up 13 runs and 16 hits in four innings of play. The Lyons reeled off four runs in the first inning, three in the second and six in the third, while the Engineers plated a pair of runs in the top half of the second.
