CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - MIT's 20th-ranked women's swimming and diving team closed out its 2007-08 dual meet schedule with a 167-122 loss to No. 4 Amherst College on Saturday afternoon in Zesiger Pool. With the setback, the Engineers' final dual meet record dropped to 6-4, while the undefeated Lord Jeffs improved to 7-0 with still one more head-to-head match-up on their ledger.

Senior diver Doria Holbrook provided the highlight of the afternoon for the Cardinal and Gray, as the co-captain won both the one-meter and three-meter diving competitions. Her scores of 300.10 points on the one-meter board and 295.95 points on the three-meter board each outdistanced the runner-up by more than 50 points.

Fellow senior Sasha Brophy provided MIT's other victory, winning the 500-yard freestyle in a near personal-best time of 5:13.43.

It was fitting that all three of the Engineers' victories on the afternoon came courtesy of seniors, as the meet served as the final home dual meet in the careers of seniors Holbrook, Brophy, Erika Erickson, Annika Larsson, Jackee Nowicke and Katy Sorensen.

Tech's other most impressive performance occurred in the 1000-yard freestyle, as Rachel Price (11:18.62), Ariadne Smith (11:27.67) and Erickson (11:46.27) combined to finish 2-3-4 and secure a significant number of points for the Cardinal and Gray.

Following the meet, head coach Dawn Gerken put forth special praise for her seniors.

"Congratulations to our seniors," she said. "They are a phenomenal group of student-athletes who have really helped build great tradition and pride in the MIT Swimming and Diving Program."

MIT will return to the pool on Saturday, Feb. 9, when it will travel to Middlebury, Vt., to participate in the Middlebury Invitational at 1:00 p.m. Amherst will also next compete on Feb. 9 at 1:00 p.m., as it will host Springfield College.
