NORTON, Mass. – The women’s swimming and diving team passed its first challenge of the 2008-09 campaign, defeating NEWMAC-rival Wheaton College on Saturday, 156-144. The Lyons won the 200 free relay to tighten the scoring at the end, but MIT was able to secure a victory in its first dual meet of the season with a plethora of solid performances.

Senior Nicole O’Keeffe authored the afternoon’s best performance as she was victorious in three individual events. She opened the day with a blow-out win in the 1000-yard free while also taking the top spot in the 500 free and 200 individual medley.

Senior Jen Chao and junior Kristie D’Ambrosio also powered the Engineers’ attack with a pair of victories. Chao swept both fly events while D’Ambrosio out-dueled two Wheaton rookies for top honors in one and three-meter diving. Chao’s nearly six-second win in the 200 fly was just over two seconds off her personal record.

MIT also enjoyed some strong results by its talented rookie class, led by Sydney Giblin. Finishing second to O’Keeffe in the 500 free, Giblin won the 200 free in a time of 2:00.83.

Despite yielding both relays, the Engineers boasted significant depth throughout the contest.
