MIT Hosts ITA New England Regional Tournament

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - This weekend, MIT played host to 20 teams in the International Tennis Association (ITA) New England Regional Women's Championships. MIT went 6-8 on the weekend as Kristen Alotta of Williams won the individual title while Julia Browne and Meghan McCooey of Tufts claimed the doubles championship.

MIT Senior Leslie Hansen, last year's runner-up, hoped to make the finals again this year and cruised through her first two matches without dropping a set. In the third round, Hansen won the first set over Alotta before the eventual champion rallied to win [2-6, 6-0 (10-8)]. Hansen was the first of four seeded players that Alotta would overcome to claim the singles crown.

MIT's other entries, sophomore Anastasia Vishnevetsky and senior Anisa McCree, both struggled in their first-round matches. Vishnevetsky was relegated to the consolation bracket by a loss to Kellen Alberstone of Bowdoin [6-1, 6-2]. After picking up wins over Nahrhree Han of Mt. Holyoke [6-2, 6-3] and Joy Backer of Vassar [7-6(5), 6-1], Vishnevetsky was finally taken down by Ashley Parsons of Williams [7-6(4), 5-7, 6-0]. McCree's losses came at the hands of Edwina Stewart of Tufts [6-4, 6-4] and Becca Heupel of Connecticut College [7-5, 7-5].

In the doubles draw, Hansen and Vishnevetsky scored victories over teams from Amherst [8-6] and Brandeis [8-1] to advance to the quarter-final and face #3 seed Grace Baljon and Taylor French of Williams. Baljon and French controlled the match and won [8-2], advancing them to the semifinals where they beat the #2 team of Mohona Siddique and Jacqueline Shen from Wellesley [8-5]. The Williams pair nearly upset the #1 seed Browne and McCooey, but the Tufts team swept the game-deciding tiebreaker for the win [9-8(0)].

MIT's doubles team of McCree and sophomore Alex Hall were handed an early exit by losses to the #4 seed Wheaton team of Nicole Pontee and Joy Backer [8-1] and Bowdoin's Kellen Alberstone and Brett Davis [8-1].

The Engineers host more tennis action this weekend when Mount Holyoke College pays a visit for a conference matchup on Saturday, September 26, at 1:00 p.m.
