MIT Defeats Wellesley, 8-1, in First Round of Nor'Easter Bowl

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Playing against a familiar foe in the first round of the 2013 Nor'Easter Bowl, the MIT women's tennis team faced off against fellow NEWMAC member and host Wellesley College in the first round of the tournament. In a rematch of the conference tournament final in October, the No. 21 Engineers defeated the No. 28 Blue, 8-1.

MIT (14-2), the third seed in the tournament, started the afternoon with a sweep of the doubles points to take an early 3-0 lead. The No. 1 team of junior Lauren Quisenberry (Corpus Christi, Texas) and freshman Victoria Tam (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) led the way for the Engineers, scoring an 8-2 win over the Wellesley (8-5) pairing of Sojung Lee and Diana Granger.  MIT's No. 3 team of sophomore Michelle Dutt (Gurnee, Ill.) and freshman Sunnie Lampl (Bluemont, Va.) was nearly as good, coming out on top by an 8-3 score over Kendall Tada and Catherine Matulis.

In singles play MIT clinched the match with four wins in which the Engineers allowed just a total of 10 games to their opponents. At No. 1, Quisenberry took a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Lee, with sophomore Vynnie Kong (Cupertino, Calif.) taking a 6-2, 6-0 win over Granger at No. 2. Moving down the ladder at No. 3, Dutt came away with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Suzanne Barth while at No. 5 it was junior Julia Hsu (Knoxville, Tenn.) scoring a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Tada. 

Freshman Meghana Vasireddy (Golden Valley, Minn.) picked up the other win for MIT, taking a 6-4, 7-6 (2) victory over Matulis in the No. 4 match. Veronica Lin picked up the lone point for Wellesley, winning her No. 6 match against in a close one over freshman Alana Peters (Kenilworth, Ill.), 5-7, 7-5, 10-5.

MIT will move on to the semifinals of the tournament tomorrow against No. 20 Skidmore, the tournament's second seed, at 12:00 p.m. at Brandeis University.
