INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – After winning the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference title in October and claiming the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships, the Engineers today saw their name in the bracket for the tournament that was released by the NCAA today. MIT will open play on Friday, May 10 when it takes on Simmons College in Brunswick, Maine.
MIT, which moved up to No. 22 in the latest national rankings, will be playing Simmons, the Great Northeast Athletic Conference champion, for a second straight time this season. The Engineers and Sharks played in the final regular season match for MIT on April 28 when the Engineers scored a 9-0 victory. The two will square off at 2:30 p.m. on the courts of host Bowdoin College. The winner will play Middlebury College on Saturday at 2:30 p.m., with the winner of that match playing at Noon on Sunday for a berth in the tournament quarterfinals.
MIT will be taking part in the tournament as a team for just the third time in school history. It has been 13 years since the last appearance for the Engineers who played Trinity (Conn.) College in 2000. Prior to that MIT also had an appearance in 1993 when it played a total of three matches. Overall the Engineers are 1-3 in NCAA play. Other schools playing at Bowdoin this weekend include the host Polar Bears along with Endicott College and Bridgewater State University.
