WELLESLEY, Mass. – Playing on the road for the first time this season, the MIT women's tennis team picked up its second win in as many tries, with the Engineers taking an impressive, 9-0, decision over Wellesley College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest. Sophomore Dora Tzeng (Fremont, Calif.) picked up a pair of wins to help MIT to the victory.
MIT (2-0, 2-0 NEWMAC) won all three of the doubles matches to take early control of the match. The No. 3 team of Tzeng and junior Krystal Lai (Irvine, Calif.) put the first point on the board for the Engineers with an 8-1 decision. MIT's No. 2 team of freshman Kelly Zhu (Houston, Texas) and sophomore Sonya Das (Arden Hills, Minn.) led all the way in their 8-5 win over junior Carina Chen (Hong Kong) and freshman Rosanne Hu (Troy, Texas). At No. 1 the duo of junior Elysa Kohrs (Half Moon Bay, Calif.) and senior Victoria Tam (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) came back from down 2-3 to take an 8-5 decision over sophomore Emily Olson (La Jolla, Calif.) and freshman Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.).
Wellesley (2-1, 1-1 NEWMAC) could not break through for a point in singles play as MIT went on to claim the sweep. Sophomore Cindy Liu (Claremont, Calif.) took the first singles point for the Engineers, scoring a 6-3, 6-2 win over Hu at No. 6. Playing at No. 2, Zhu put the match in the win column for MIT, taking a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Huang. The Engineers went on to win three more singles matches in three sets, with Kohrs (No. 1), Tzeng (No. 3) and Das (No. 4) getting the victories.
Freshman Tristan Lorich (New York, N.Y.) was the only player for the Blue that took a set off of the Engineers, battling back to tie her match at No 5 against Tam before Tam came back in the third set to close out the day with a 6-4, 1-6, 10-4 win.
MIT will continue in NEWMAC tomorrow when it hosts Springfield College at Noon. Wellesley will also play tomorrow, hosting Mount Holyoke College at 11:00 a.m.
