MIDDLEBURRY, Vt. – A tough field and injuries cut short the 2015 USTA/ITA Division III Women's New England Regional Tennis Championship for the MIT women's tennis team. Junior Elysa Kohrs (Half Moon Bay, Calif.) brought home a win in singles play for the Engineers.
Freshman Kelly Zhu (Houston, Texas) was first up for MIT, facing off against freshman Catherine Miller (Indianapolis, Ind.) of Middlebury College, which is hosting the event. In a very close first set the pair battled back and forth, going to a tie breaker before Miller came away with a 7-6 (11-9) win. Unfortunately Zhu was unable to continue and retired from the match.
Sophomore Sonya Das (Arden Hills, Minn.) also faced a player from host Middlebury, junior Lily Bondy (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who was a 9-16 seed in the bracket. Das could not come up with the upset, falling 6-2, 6-3. Kohrs, the No. 6 seed in the field of 64, faced off against freshman Sarah Shadowens (Grand Rapids, Mich.) from Bowdoin College and scored what proved to be MIT's lone win, a 6-1, 6-3 decision. But Kohrs could not continue to her second round match due to an injury.
MIT also had a doubles team at the event, with Das and Zhu taking on sophomores Helen Klass-Warch (Saint Paul, Minn.) and Dasha Dubinsky (Antelope, Calif.) from Wesleyan University, with the Cardinal pair knocking the Engineers out of the bracket with an 8-3 decision.
MIT will be back in action as a team on Tuesday, September 29 when the Engineers will host Clark University in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMC) match. Action will begin at 4:00 p.m. at the DuPont Tennis Courts.
