CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A second evening of tennis action between teams from MIT and Loughborough University took place in the J.B. Carr Tennis Bubble on the MIT campus today, with four mixed doubles teams playing on the Engineers' indoor courts.
Loughborough got off to a good start in all four matches, winning the first set in each. The visitors from England then picked up their first win of the night when the No. 2 team of Louise Holtum and Ryan Lambert defeated sophomore Sonya Das (Arden Hills, Minn.) and freshman Tyler Barr (Auburn Township, Ohio), 6-2, 6-1.
MIT then staged a comeback, taking leads in both the No. 3 and No. 4 matches. Loughborough thwarted the comeback attempts, however, coming from behind to win both. At No. 4 Emily Rodbourne and James Kirkpatrick took a 6-4, 6-4 win over sophomore Rena Liu (Oak Hill, Va.) and freshman Alex Cauneac (Severna Park, Md.), while at No. 3 the English duo of Tory Bullock and Guy Weerasekera rallied to take a 6-3, 6-4 decision over sophomore Dora Tzeng (Fremont, Calif.) and sophomore Bryan Lilley (Edmond, Okla.).
In the No. 1 match the MIT team of junior Elysa Kohrs (Half Moon Bay, Calif.) and senior Kevin Wang (Havertown, Pa.) battled their opponents, Olivia Nichols and Gavin McKinlay, shot for shot in the second set before they finally fell by a final of 6-1, 7-6 (5)
Competition between the two institutions will finish tomorrow when the men's teams will compete in a pair of doubles and four singles matches. Pay will begin at 5:00 p.m. in the Carr Bubble.
