Boston, Mass. (October 25) -- Seven members of the MIT women's tennis team have been named to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) All-Conference Teams for their play during the 2016 fall season. In addition, head coach Carol Matsuzaki has been named as the league's Coach of the Year for the third straight season and eighth time overall.
The Engineers capped off the fall schedule with the program's eighth NEWMAC Conference Championship with a 5-3 win over No. 2 seeded Wellesley College.
The trio of freshmen Lara Rakocevic (Portland, Ore.), Sharlene Song (Arcadia, Calif.) and Serena Le (Aiea, Hawaii) all earned First Team All-Conference honors in singles action. Rakocevic earned the honor at the No. 4 spot, while Song was No. 5 and Le was the No. 6 singles First Team selection. Junior Rena Liu (Oak Hill, Va.) and Le earned First Team All-Conference accolades at the No. 3 spot as the duo put together an undefeated NEWMAC regular season.
Picking up spots on the Second Team were junior Dora Tzeng (Fremont, Calif.), sophomore Kelly Zhu (Pearland, Texas) and junior Sonya Das (Arden Hills, Minn.). Tzeng was the Second Team selection at No. 1 singles, while Zhu was at No. 2 singles and Das at No. 3. The Engineers also had a pair of doubles teams named to the All-Conference Second Team as Tzeng and Das were named at No. 1, along with Zhu and Rakocevic at No. 2 doubles.
In addition to the All-Conference Teams, the Tzeng was named to the newly-established NEWMAC All-Sportsmanship Team for the 2016 season. The award is intended to recognize one student-athlete from each team, in every sport, that best demonstrates the ideals of the NEWMAC and its Code of Conduct.
