No. 9 Women's Tennis Opens Fall Season at Tufts Invitational

THE BASICS:

- Location: Medford, Mass. (Voute Tennis Courts)

- The Lead: The No. 9 ranked MIT women's tennis team opened up the fall season over the weekend at the Tufts University Invitational in Medford as the event took place Friday-Sunday.

HOW IT HAPPENED IN SINGLES ACTION:

- In the singles draw, sophomore Libby Rickeman (Wayzata, Minn.) was seeded No. 2 and advanced into the semifinals with three straight-set victories. In the semifinals, she took on Amherst freshman Jacqueline Bukzin and after winning the first set 6-2, she dropped the final two sets as Bukzin eventually finished as the tournament runner-up.

- Sophomore Marina Zhang (Garnet Valley, Pa.) and freshman Viktoriya Tabunshchyk (Ancaster, Canada) both advanced into the quarterfinals of singles play. Tabunshchyk earned two straight-set wins before falling to Bukzin, while Zhang dropped a three-set final to eventual champion Kristina Yu of Wesleyan. Sophomore Megan Guenther (Willowbrook, Ill.) also picked up a first-round win as she defeated 5-8 seeded Maggie Dorr from Tufts in a 5-7, 6-4, 10-8 match.

- In the consolation singles draw, junior Lara Rakocevic (Portland, Ore.), sophomore Alex Reinhart (Austin, Texas) and freshman Ashley Teng (Tustin, Calif.) all earned victories. Teng advanced into the consolation semifinals before falling in a 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 margin to eventual winner Polina Kiseleva of Wesleyan.

A LOOK INSIDE THE DOUBLES BRACKETS:

- In doubles, the MIT teams of freshman Teng and sophomore Vanessa Kitova (Beverly, Mass.), Guenther/Zhang and Rickeman/Tabunshchyk all picked up first-round victories. Guenther and Zhang dropped an 8-1 semifinal to Kristina Yu and Victoria Yu of Wesleyan, while Rickeman and Tabunshchyk fell in a tight 8-6 match in the championship to the duo from Wesleyan.

- In consolation doubles play, Rakocevic and freshman Amber Shen (Broomfield, Colo.) were defeated by Jane Fraley and May Zhu of Amherst in an 8-3 match.

UP NEXT:

- The Engineers return to action for the ITA New England Regional Tournament on September 28-30. That event will be hosted by Williams College in Williamstown, Mass.
