CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The MIT women's tennis team had solid outing at this past weekend's NEWITT Tournament hosted by Amherst College, Mount Holyoke College, and Smith College. Mariah Hoover, Yi Wang, Anisa McCree, and Emily Chen advanced to the quarterfinals in the singles bracket while Hoover and Wang and McCree and Kerry Weinberg represented the Engineers in the doubles quarterfinals brackets.
In the No. 1 singles flight, Leslie Hansen fell to No. 1 seed and eventual champion Cary Gibson (Williams College), 6-2, 6-3, in her opening match. Following a first round bye, Hoover defeated Rachael Ghorbani (Wesleyan University), 6-1, 6-1, before falling to Brittany Berckes (Amherst), 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 2 singles bracket. Wang posted a 6-4, 6-1 win over Joanna Nettlefield (Roger Williams University) and a 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 victory over Anika Fischer (Wesleyan) before losing to No. 3 seed Kristen Raymond (Bowdoin College), 6-0, 2-6, 7-6 (2).
In the No. 4 singles flight, McCree defeated Megan Cornell (Roger Williams), 6-4, 6-2, but lost to top-seed Jen Murphy (Amherst), 6-3, 6-1. Joanna MacKay fell in her opening match to Anjali Bhalodia (Mount Holyoke), 6-1, 6-4. Chen, seeded fourth in the No. 6 singles bracket, posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jean Gulliver (Trinity College) before losing to Elizabeth Emery (Middlebury College), 6-1, 6-1.
Hansen and MacKay lost their match to Emery and Smyser (Middlebury), 8-6, in the No. 1 doubles flight. No. 4 seed Hoover and Wang defeated Milic-Strkalj and Jackson (Wheaton College), 8-1, but dropped a tough match to Fallon and Bender (Connecticut College), 9-8 (4). McCree and Weinberg overpowered McCraven and Richardson (Roger Williams), 8-2, before falling, 8-0, to Miller and Gentzler (Tufts).
