CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Following an historical outing at the Division III Wilson/ITA Women’s New England Championship this past weekend, junior Leslie Hansen was voted the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Singles Player of the Week. She became the first person in the history of the MIT women’s tennis program to finish as a singles finalist which followed up her appearance in the semifinals last year.
Hansen, seeded No. 3 for the second year in a row, opened the competition with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Chandra Kurien (Middlebury College). She then defeated Elisa Marifian (Mount Holyoke College), 6-1, 6-0, Laura Danzig (Amherst College), 4-6, 6-2, 10-8, and Laken King (Amherst College), 6-3, 6-3. In the semifinals Hansen edged out No. 2 Brittany Berckes (Amherst College), 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) before falling to No. 4 Julia Browne (Tufts University), 7-5, 6-0, in the title match.
