Women’s Field Athletes Excel at Yale Invitational

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The women's field athletes' set four personal records on Saturday as the MIT track and field team competed at the Yale Invitational held at Cuyler Field and Dwyer Track. All track events took place outdoors, but because of the poor weather, all jumpers were moved indoors.

Junior Jackie Vahey (Winchester, Mass.) had one of the most consistent performances for the Engineers as she won the discus throw with a distance of 136-feet, 1-inch (41.48m) and set a PR in the hammer throw with a second place finish (168-feet, 3-inches – 51.28m). The junior rounded out her day with fourth place in the shot put (36-feet, 5.75-inches – 11.12m).

Four more Engineers claimed first place finishes in the field yesterday afternoon. Sophomore Nneoma Okonkwo (Lagos, Nigeria) won the long jump with a best leap of 17-feet, 11.75-inches (5.48m), classmate Katherine Prutz (Baton Rouge, La.) claimed the high jump in 5-feet, 3.25-inches (1.61m), senior Cimran Virdi (Walnut Creek, Calif.) won the pole vault in 13-feet, 1.5-inches (4.00m) and classmate Isabella Stuopis (Amherst, N.H.) took first in the shout put with a best throw of 38-feet, 6.25-inches (11.74m).

Sophomore Ariela Slutsky (Weston, Fla.) set a personal best in the discus for second place with a throw of 128-feet, 4-inches (39.12m), while classmate Dana Balek (Boxford, Mass.) registered a PR in the javelin throw that went 114-feet, 4-inches (34.84m). Sophomore Haley Strouf (Rice Lake, Wis.) rounded out the list of personal best for MIT when she placed eighth in the hammer throw (128-feet, 3-inches – 39.09m).

On the track, freshman Bailey Tregoning (Frederick, Md.) won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:20.82, while sophomore Hannah Chen (Los Gatos, Calif.) crossed the line second in both the 100-meter hurdles (16.02) and the 400-meter hurdles (1:03.95).

Okonkwo, junior Natalie Alper (Columbia, Md.), classmate Kendra Knittel (Tucson, Ariz.) and Chen were uncontested in the 4x100-meter relay, but the quad produced a time of 52.57-seconds. Okonkwo began the meet for the Engineers in second place in the 100-meter dash in 12.93-seconds.

The Engineers are back in action next weekend when they host Bates College, Tufts University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in MIT's first home outdoor meet of the 2016 season.
