Chen, Slutsky Claim NEWMAC Women's Track Weekly Honors

Westwood, Mass. (April 17) -- MIT seniors Hannah Chen (Los Gatos, Calif.) and Ariela Slutsky (Weston, Fla.) have been named as the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Track and Field Athletes of the Week for their performances in a win over No. 1 ranked Williams College. For Chen, this is her second weekly honor, while Slutsky is recognized for the first time.

In the 400-meter hurdles, Chen posted the No. 5 time in the country as she crossed in a winning time of 1:01.93. She was also second in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.32 seconds and was a member of the 4x100 relay team that finished in 49.54 seconds. In addition to her No. 5 ranking nationally in the 400 hurdles, she is also ranked 43rd in the 100 hurdles.

Slutsky was a three-time winning the dual meet victory over the Ephs as she captured the shot put, discus and hammer throw and posted two top-10 marks nationally. She won the hammer throw with a distance of 169 feet, two inches and the discus at 143 feet, nine inches and is currently ranked No. 7 and No. 9, respectively. Slutsky also threw 35 feet, 6.75 inches to win the shot put.

The Engineers return to action this weekend as the team hosts the Sean Collier Invitational beginning at 10:15 a.m. on Saturday. The team is also sending a number of athletes to the Larry Ellis Invitational on Friday at Princeton University.
