Westwood, Mass. (April 23) -- MIT seniors Mary Eccles (Wahaiwa, Hawaii) and Ariela Slutsky (Weston, Fla.) have been named as the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Track and Field Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
This marks the second time this season that both of these athletes have been recognized in the NEWMAC weekly awards.
On Friday at the Larry Ellis Invitational in New Jersey, Eccles captured the 10,000 meters in a time of 35:27.17 as she won the event by just under two minutes. Her time is the No. 2 mark in MIT history and is currently ranked seventh nationally and first among NEWMAC runners.
At the Sean Collier Invitational at home on Saturday, Slutsky captured the hammer throw and discus to lead the Engineers. In winning the hammer, Slutsky broke the school record as she threw 182 feet, 4.5 inches to win the event by 16 feet, six inches and rank fourth in the country. She also threw 140 feet, one inch in winning the discus as that was the longest mark in the NEWMAC last week.
The Engineers are back in action on Saturday, April 28th as the team travels to the NEWMAC Championship in Springfield, Mass.
