Beverly, Mass. (November 21) – The New England Women's Volleyball Association (NEWVA) selected MIT junior Abby Bertics (La Jolla, Calif.) as its Player of the Year as announced by the organization on Tuesday. In addition, Bertics earned a spot on the NEWVA All-New England First Team and was joined by senior Alli Davanzo (Saint Johns, Fla.) on the list. Freshman Andie Maloney (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) was voted to the Second Team as well as the All-Rookie Team.
Bertics, who was a second team pick last season and the 2015 NEWVA Rookie of the Year, registered 447 kills which ranks second in the NEWMAC and eighth all-time at MIT. She was also second in the league in kills per set (4.06) and finished fourth in hitting percentage (.326).
The 2014 NEWVA Rookie of the Year and an honorable mention recipient her sophomore season, Davanzo closed out her career ranking third all-time at MIT in hitting percentage (.340) and ninth in blocks (282). She also produced 846 kills during her four seasons with the Engineers.
Maloney, who was named the NEWMAC Rookie of the Year earlier this month, directed an offense that led the conference in hitting percentage (.248) and ranked ninth nationally. The squad also paced the NEWMAC in kills (1,436) and kills per set (12.82). Individually, Maloney led the league in assists per set (10.02) and was fifth in assists (862).
