CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Following a pair of strong performances at the Engineer's Cup meet over the weekend, the MIT men's and women's cross country teams received a pair of weekly honors from the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). Benjamin Mattocks (Sharon, Mass.) was named the conference Men's Runner of the Week while Alexandra Taylor (Harbor Springs, Mich.) was tabbed on the women's side.
Taylor was instrumental in helping the Cardinal and Gray capture the team title on the women's side for the sixth year in a row. The sophomore was the first of five Tech harriers among the top seven, as she navigated the five-kilometer course 15 seconds faster than her closest competitor. Her time of 19:36 was nearly a minute faster than her previous personal best.
Mattocks was involved in an excellent duel down the stretch with Jeff Corelli of RPI but the senior was just barely outkicked at the finish. His time of 26:44 was good for a runner-up showing as MIT took home second-place honors as a team.
Both squads will be back in action next weekend, traveling to the UMass-Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday, September 17. The men's race begins at 10:30 a.m. and will be followed by the women at 12:00 p.m.
