Sept. 12, 2005

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The women's cross country team made a valiant effort at the Smith College Invitational this weekend. MIT finished second of ten teams and 72 points behind the Wellesley squad that cruised to victory. Wellesley senior Tracy Bassett won the 5000 meter race with a time of 19:30.70.

Although MIT did not win the race, there was a sign of greatness for the Engineers. Freshman Elizabeth Finn from Winnetka, Illinois placed fifth in her first collegiate race. Finn's time of 19:57.80 was 1:02.40 faster than the next highest Engineer finish and only 27.1 seconds behind Tracy Basset.

The race, which annually has been called the Engineer's Cup and featured MIT, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute, this year was dubbed the Smith College Invitational and featured ten teams including RPI, WPI, Wellesley, Smith, Coast Guard, Mount Holyoke, Salve Regina, Clark and Lasell. Although MIT finished second out of the ten teams, the Engineers placed ahead of RPI (fifth) and WPI (seventh). For MIT, the victory over RPI and WPI marked the ninth time that the Engineers have been victorious in the Engineer's Cup, as well as the fourth consecutive year.

MIT travels to North Dartmouth, Massachusetts for the UMass-Dartmouth Invitational next weekend. Action will begin on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
